Smiles School of Music and Creative Arts is borne out of the desire to see children and young people begin a lifelong relationship with music. Our goal is for children to colloborate with others who have a similar desire to create beautiful music. We aspire to do this within a supportive and relaxed environment, where everyone is here to have fun.
The story began in the 1950s with the arrival of my late grandmother from the sunny shores Jamaica. She had responded to the call from the Mother Country, England. She was the Principal Organist at her local Methodist Church and taught many of the children there. As grandchildren, we were used to her own unique style of teaching classical piano. Often, she would be in kitchen cooking but hearing and correcting our mistakes just by listening. This served as an invaluable lesson about listening and its relevance to music.
Our programmes are focused on simulating young musicians to create interesting and moving music. The programmes vary from simple song-writing compositions to learning basic recording techniques. We also focus on developing listening skills and musical collaboration in relation to a number of aspects including recording. We also have 'performance' sessions.
Our events are specially created to focus on different skills required for contemporary music. These events primarily consist of workshops, masterclasses and concerts. They take place during school holidays.
Our next upcoming event is Summer Creative Music Workshop 2016. It will be held from Mon. 22nd Aug to Sat. 27th - Sir William Borlase's Grammar School.
